Funny AF Academy

The Course

From 'I'm funny at work' to professor of funny.

One course. Six units. It starts with 4,000 years of people falling in rivers and ends with you able to explain, teach, and repeat your own laugh mechanics.

Lessons 1 and 2 are free. History belongs to everybody.

Unit 1 — The History of Comedy (And Other Crimes)

Every move you're about to learn was already done — badly, brilliantly, or illegally — by someone in a toga, a tuxedo, or a Catskills dining room. We wrote the book on this. Now we're teaching it with the jokes left in.

What the course pulls together

  • • The Encyclopedia — 1,000 concepts, as your textbook.
  • • The Film Room — watch a great, name the move, run the drill.
  • • The LOL Engine — write with the operators you just learned.
  • • The Gym — daily reps, timed drills, set lab, crowd work.
  • • Comedy DNA — your gaps become your next lessons.
  • • Passport — stage minutes and badges as proof, not vibes.

Syllabus

Six units. Beginner to professor.

Unit 2Beginner

See Funny

You stop walking past material like it owes you money.

  • The observation notebook (and why yours is boring)
  • Naming the invisible rule
  • Premise pressure: what's actually weird here?
  • Taste: why some true things die on stage
Unit 3Intermediate

Write Funny

You build jokes on purpose instead of praying.

  • Setup / punch architecture
  • The operators and how to stack them
  • Specificity, brevity, word order
  • Tags: three laughs from one premise
  • Add the egg: the human detail that makes it yours
Unit 4Intermediate

Be Funny

The words survive contact with your mouth.

  • Timing, pause, and the holy silence
  • Act-outs and character
  • Point of view and status
  • Bombing without dying
Unit 5Advanced

Destroy The Room

You control the room, not the script.

  • Crowd work as structure, not chaos
  • Callbacks across a whole set
  • Set architecture and pacing
  • Hecklers, silence, and the second wave
Unit 6Professor

Professor

You can explain why it's funny, teach it, and build a voice nobody can copy.

  • Comedy theory without the beret
  • Reverse-engineering the greats in the Film Room
  • Your Comedy DNA, your gaps, your curriculum
  • Coaching other comics (the fastest way to get better)
  • Building an unmistakable persona
