The 1980s comedy boom put a brick wall and a stool in every strip mall in America. Then it crashed, because when everyone can be a comedian, most people are. The 1990s alt-comedy scene rebuilt it in coffee shops and back rooms by doing the one thing the clubs couldn't: being weird on purpose for a small, correct audience.
