The First Joke Was Probably About Someone Falling
Prehistory to Sumer. Comedy is older than writing, farming, and definitely older than the two-drink minimum.
Free lesson. No card, no gate, no excuses.
Here is the most likely origin of comedy. A guy named Grug walked past a river carrying everything the tribe owned. Grug fell in. Nine people made a noise they had never made before. That noise was laughter, and it was the first review Grug ever got, and it was bad.
Notice what happened mechanically, because this is the whole course in one splash. The tribe had an expectation: Grug carries things, Grug arrives. Reality delivered something else: Grug is now a wet man and dinner is downstream. The gap between expectation and reality, released safely, is laughter. Everything after this — Aristophanes, Shakespeare, Pryor, the guy at your open mic doing four minutes about vaping — is a refinement of Grug going in the river.
Comedy is tragedy plus time. Grug's version was tragedy plus zero seconds, which is why the tribe felt a little bad. But only a little. Grug had it coming; he'd been showing off.
The Egyptians did riddle-jokes. The Sumerians did body jokes. Every culture we have records for produced a professional idiot: someone paid, tolerated, or at minimum not killed, for saying the thing everyone was thinking. That's your job description. It has not been updated in 4,000 years. There are no dental benefits.
Three things the cave already knew
- • Surprise is the engine. No gap, no laugh.
- • Safety is the permission slip. If Grug drowns, nobody laughs. If Grug is fine and humiliated, everybody laughs.
- • Status is the fuel. Comedy runs on someone being lowered — ideally the person with the most to lose, ideally you.
“Every comedian is just doing the cave thing with a microphone and worse posture.”
Why start a comedy course with history instead of joke formulas? Because ninety percent of new comics think they're inventing something, and the other ten percent think nothing is left. Both are wrong in the same way. The moves are ancient and finite. The combination is yours. History is not homework here; it's the tool catalog.
The rep
Write three sentences about the last time you personally were Grug — a small public humiliation, no injuries. Then underline the exact detail (a name, a number, a piece of clothing) that makes it undeniably yours. That underlined thing is the egg. You'll be adding it to everything for the rest of the course.
Takeaway
Laughter = a broken expectation, released safely, usually at somebody's status. You did not invent it. Good.
