Deep definition
Exaggeration takes an observation the audience already accepts and inflates one dimension of it — scale, frequency, duration, consequence — while keeping everything else honest. The joke is not the lie. The joke is that the lie is emotionally accurate.
Why humans laugh
The brain holds a model of normal size. Violating that model while preserving emotional truth creates benign incongruity: safe surprise plus recognition.
Formula
TRUE OBSERVATION + ONE DIMENSION INFLATED 10x = COMIC IMAGE
Good examples
- My airline seat had the legroom of a hostage situation.
- He apologized with the enthusiasm of a hostage reading a statement.
- I've been meaning to go to the gym since the Obama administration.
Bad example
My flight was really, really, really long. (Intensifiers are not exaggeration — no new image.)
Before → After
The meeting ran long.
The meeting ran so long that two people in it aged out of the target demographic.
When to use
When the observation is true but flat, and the audience needs to feel the size of it.
When not to use
When the subject is already absurd — exaggerating absurdity just produces noise.
Common failure modes
- Inflating everything at once
- Vague intensifiers
- Exaggerating past emotional truth
Advanced combinations
- EX + SP = the vivid impossible detail
- EX + ES = the ladder
- EX + AN = the outrageous comparison
Writing
Draft the flat true line first, then inflate exactly one dimension per pass.
Stage
Commit physically. A hedged exaggeration reads as a mistake, not a choice.
Crowd work
Inflate what an audience member just told you, never who they are.
Improv
Heighten the size of the unusual thing you both already agreed on.
Business
Turn a benefit claim into an image people can repeat at a dinner table.
Told to the AI as
Identify one measurable dimension in the input and inflate only that dimension while preserving the emotional truth. Return the concrete image, not intensifiers.
Exercises
Beginner
Write 10 true sentences about your commute. Inflate one dimension of each.
Intermediate
Take one observation and write 5 exaggerations at increasing sizes. Keep the emotional truth.
Advanced
Write a 60-second bit where each exaggeration is bigger than the last and the last one is still believable.
