Deep definition
Three is the minimum number of items required to establish and violate a pattern. Items one and two must be genuinely compatible — the more sincere the pattern, the harder the break lands. The third item is the punch and must come last.
Why humans laugh
Rapid pattern induction followed by immediate violation — the cheapest reliable surprise in comedy.
Formula
NORMAL + NORMAL + BREAK
Good examples
- My grandfather taught me honesty, patience, and how to get out of a jury summons.
Bad example
I like apples, oranges, and bananas. (Pattern with no break.)
Before → After
I packed for the trip.
I packed a toothbrush, a phone charger, and a document explaining my choices.
When to use
Everywhere. It's the workhorse.
When not to use
When you've already used three triples in two minutes.
Common failure modes
- Weak third item
- Third item not last
- Overuse
Advanced combinations
- R3 + SP = the specific break
- R3 + ES = each triple bigger than the last
