Deep definition
Escalation is how a joke becomes a bit. Once the audience has identified the game, every repetition must raise the stakes, the absurdity, or the consequence. Flat repetition dies; geometric repetition builds.
Why humans laugh
Pattern recognition plus anticipatory tension. The audience starts predicting, and the escalation must outrun the prediction.
Formula
GAME ESTABLISHED → SAME MOVE, BIGGER STAKES → SAME MOVE, UNSURVIVABLE STAKES
Good examples
- First I lied on the form. Then I lied to the notary. Then I lied at the funeral of the notary.
Bad example
It was bad. Then it was bad again. Then it was bad. (Repetition without increase.)
Before → After
My neighbor is nosy.
My neighbor asked how my day was, then how my divorce was, then whether the new car was a coping mechanism.
When to use
After the game is clear and the audience has laughed once.
When not to use
Before the game is established, or when the topic is too heavy to escalate safely.
Common failure modes
- Escalating too fast
- Changing games mid-ladder
- No top to the ladder
Advanced combinations
- ES + R3 = the three-rung ladder
- ES + CB = the escalating callback
Writing
Write rung 1 and rung 5 first, then fill the middle.
Stage
Increase pace and physical commitment with each rung.
Crowd work
Heighten your own assumption about the audience member, not their real life.
Improv
Heighten the unusual thing, then explore why it's normal in this world.
Business
Build a three-step consequence chain that makes the pain undeniable, then sell the fix.
Told to the AI as
Detect the game and produce a ladder of 3-5 beats, each raising stakes without switching games.
Exercises
Beginner
Take one absurd premise and write 3 rungs.
Intermediate
Write a 5-rung ladder where the last rung is still logically justified.
Advanced
Escalate a bit for 2 minutes without repeating a single noun.
