Taboo

Audience Dynamics · Risk · Dangerous · aka Risk, The third rail

Approach the forbidden subject with a real idea, not just the forbidden word.

Deep definition

Taboo generates tension, and tension released becomes laughter. But shock alone is not a joke: it's an unresolved tension. Taboo material only works when there's a genuine perspective, a target chosen with care, and a structure strong enough to carry the risk.

Why humans laugh

Benign violation: the violation must be real and the safety must also be real.

Formula

FORBIDDEN SUBJECT + GENUINE POINT OF VIEW + PRECISE TARGET + AIRTIGHT STRUCTURE

Good examples

  • A bit about grief where the joke is on the absurdity of funeral logistics, not on the dead.

Bad example

Saying the worst possible word and looking around for a reaction.

Before → After

Shock line with no idea.

Same subject, joke aimed at the institution instead of the victim.

When to use

When you have something true to say and the craft to land it.

When not to use

Corporate rooms, cold rooms, or when you're only after a reaction.

Common failure modes

  • Shock without idea
  • Punching down
  • Mistaking gasps for laughs

Advanced combinations

  • TB + CF = the shared shame
  • TB + MS = the safe landing

Writing

Write the target explicitly at the top of the page. If it's a victim, rewrite.

Stage

Earn the room first. Risk without trust is just noise.

Crowd work

Read the room's tolerance before you spend it.

Improv

Commit to the emotional truth, not the shock.

Business

Almost always the wrong tool. Use risk of honesty, not risk of offense.

Told to the AI as

Never generate shock without an idea; require a defensible target and a structural payoff.

Exercises

  1. Beginner

List subjects that make you nervous. Find the non-victim target in each.

  2. Intermediate

Write one risky bit aimed only at institutions.

  3. Advanced

Perform a risky bit that ends with the audience on your side.
