Reframe

Observation · Perspective · Intermediate · aka Perspective shift, The other angle

Describe the familiar thing from a viewpoint that makes it look insane.

Deep definition

Reframing changes the observer, not the object. Describe a wedding as a hostage negotiation with catering, or dating apps from the perspective of the phone. The facts stay; the frame moves; the audience sees the thing for the first time.

Why humans laugh

Defamiliarization — perception refreshes when the interpretive frame changes.

Formula

SAME FACTS + NEW OBSERVER / CONTEXT / TIME PERIOD

Good examples

  • Describing a gym: people paying monthly to lift heavy objects and put them back exactly where they found them.

Bad example

Think about it — isn't life weird? (Naming the reframe without doing it.)

Before → After

People love brunch.

Brunch is a scheduled event where adults pay restaurant prices to eat breakfast late and call it a personality.

When to use

When the topic is over-covered and needs a new door.

When not to use

When the frame requires more setup than the payoff is worth.

Common failure modes

  • Frame too clever to follow
  • Frame that isn't actually new

Advanced combinations

  • RF + AN = the alien anthropologist
  • RF + RV = the flipped frame

Writing

List 8 observers (alien, child, dog, historian, IRS) and rewrite from each.

Stage

Take the audience with you: state the frame, then live inside it.

Crowd work

Reframe the venue itself from an outsider's view.

Improv

Change who is watching the scene and the scene changes.

Business

Reframing the category is how challenger brands win.

Told to the AI as

Generate rewrites of the input from at least 4 distinct observer frames.

Exercises

  1. Beginner

Describe your job as an alien would.

  2. Intermediate

Reframe one ritual through 5 observers.

  3. Advanced

Sustain a single reframe across an entire 3-minute bit.
