Act 3 — Study the masters · Week 22 of 52

Chris Rock

How does an argument become comedy?

Change one person's mind while they're laughing.

The five moves

Same rhythm, every week.

  1. 1Study

Bring the Pain, Never Scared. Listen for the thesis inside minute one.

Watch on purpose. Specific comedians, specific reason.

  2. 2Deconstruct

Write out the thesis, the evidence, the repetition and the closing claim.

Isolate one mechanism. Name it before you use it.

  3. 3Write

One argument bit: a claim you'd defend, made funny.

10–25 premises minimum. Quantity buys quality.

  4. 4Perform

Perform it like you mean to win.

Somewhere live. The classroom is useful; the audience is the laboratory.

  5. 5Review

    Did repetition build or bore?

Watch the tape. Log what the room did, not what you felt.

The Comedy Genome

Tag what made you laugh.

Tag every joke you studied this week. After a few months the pattern stops being an opinion and becomes your comedy DNA.

Your twin asks

Eleven questions, every week.
